Wise Wisdom From Wise Seniors: Cleaning Hacks

A photograph showing cleaning a diamond with a toothbrush.

One of the perks I have been able to enjoy over the years of owning and operating my own home care company is that I get to meet many remarkable people. Seniors are extremely wise, full of colorful stories and generous with their time and words of advice. I have been fortunate enough to hear words of wisdom on every subject from love, marriage, life, and yes, even cleaning! Of course, I was most eager to write them down, knowing that someday I might be able to share these words of advice with others who could benefit from them the way that I have.  Here are the top cleaning tips collected from the great seniors we got to know and love at Caring Companions At Home:

  • Bathtub rings can be removed by rubbing them using salt and cut grapefruit. Another solution that works great on bathtubs is a paste, made by combining liquid soap and baking soda mixed with water.
  • Clean your silverware with baking soda.
  • Put a microwave-safe dish filled with water and dishwashing liquid into your microwave. Turn it on “high” for one full minute. You can then wipe the microwave down easily (yes, even the crusty stuff) with a wet sponge.
  • White toothpaste can also be used to clean your engagement ring.
  • Use vegetable oil and baking soda on a toothbrush to clean your cabinet doors.
  • Clean your iron by running it hot without steam over a piece of paper or foil covered with salt.
  • Use chalk before you wash your clothes to clean greasy stains quickly.
  • Fill your burned pan with water, add two cups of vinegar, bring to the boil, take it off the heat and add two tablespoons of baking soda.
  • Remove lipstick stains by spraying them with hairspray and lightly rubbing it with a dampened cloth before washing them.
  • Clean the grimiest grout in your bathroom with baking soda and bleach.
  • Play dough can be used to remove spilled glitter.
  • Your coffee grinder can be smell-free if you just grind some uncooked white rice in it.
  • Hang a plastic bag filled with vinegar around your shower (heard inside the bag) and leave it dunked for an hour to get rid of shower stains.
  • Protect your baseboards from hair and dust with dryer sheets.
  • Coffee stains are a breeze to clean with baking soda.
  • Clean stainless-steel appliances with cream of tartar.
